About our Junior Golf Programmes
Creating opportunities for every golfer
At Dumfries & Galloway Golf Club, we believe every junior golfer deserves the opportunity to thrive and enjoy the game. To make this a reality, we provide structured junior golf programmes tailored to a wide variety of ages and abilities.

Creating the spark
At Dumfries & Galloway, we know that creating the spark for the love of the game in younger kids and beginners requires a unique approach.
It is about capturing their imagination before teaching them the mechanics.
We focus on making those first steps into golf completely accessible, vibrant, and fun.
By shifting the focus from strict technical drills to game-based learning and shared achievements, we strip away the pressure and replace it with pure excitement.
Seeing a beginner’s face light up when they connect cleanly with the ball for the first time is where the magic happens—that is the exact moment the spark is lit, turning a curious novice into a passionate young golfer.

Climbing the Rainbow Ladder
The Rainbow Ladder at Dumfries & Galloway Golf Club is an engaging, structured progression framework designed to transition junior golfers from introductory hitting to full-course competitive play.
Running on Tuesday nights from 6:00 PM to 7:15 PM, by Junior Committee members; Stevie Thom, Stuart Hair & Grant Hair, the programme alternates weekly between assessment sessions and targeted coaching.

Juniors play three shortened holes from specific distance stages—ranging from Red at 25 yards up to Blue at 200 yards.
To advance to the next ladder rung, players must complete the three holes in 15 shots or better. Every success is celebrated with matching badge stickers for their membership badges and an official achievement certificate, giving them a tangible sense of pride as they progress.

Conquering the course
Completing the Rainbow Ladder is just the beginning. Once our golfers graduate from the ladder, they transition seamlessly onto the main course to compete in our 4, 7, and 11-hole medals.
Our support continues at every step of the journey. We provide expert, tailored coaching for all levels, helping our juniors advance through each competitive milestone. Our ultimate goal is to build both their technical ability and their confidence, ensuring they feel completely comfortable playing in any format of the game.

At this stage we also offer our junior golfers a pathway into National Junior Golf Sixes competitions for Under 12s without handicaps, an extremely fun team event played at our course and neighbouring courses.

Introducing Competition
When our junior golfers are ready to transition to full 18-hole play, we embark on another exciting chapter by gently introducing a competitive element for those who want it.
However, competition is entirely optional.
Juniors who prefer a relaxed experience can continue playing purely social golf. Our primary goal is to ensure the kids love being out on the course; to support this, we make our junior days as lively and engaging as possible by incorporating fun team formats and interactive games.

At this stage our junior golfers can also begin to obtain their official handicaps and begin to transition to more advanced tailored coaching provided by our Professional Team.

Elite Level & Beyond
For juniors aspiring to reach the elite level, our dedicated team of PGA Professionals are equipped to guide them as far as their ambition takes them. Backed by top-tier facilities—including our state-of-the-art indoor simulator and extensive practice areas—every young player has the resources to reach the absolute heights of the sport.
We provide a clear bridge from club play to elite performance. Our highly successful junior league team introduces players to the excitement of matchplay against neighbouring clubs.
Beyond local competition, we actively project our talented golfers onto the national stage through the South of Scotland Junior Order of Merit events and regional championships.
For juniors driven to test their limits, this competitive exposure is the direct gateway to earning selection for South of Scotland regional squads.
From there, the pathway extends to national Junior Team Golf events and Scottish Golf performance academies, proving that a journey sparked at Dumfries & Galloway Golf Club can lead all the way to representing their country.
