Winter Projects – Tree Management
November/December 2016

As some of you maybe be aware the green staff have started the process of putting a Tree Management plan into action. There is a number of areas on the course that need attention and the aim is to do as many as possible when the weather is suitable. The greens team are clearing the lower overhanging branches and removing any deadwood to raise the tree crowns. This is done for many reasons depending on the location of the trees.

The copse of trees at the back of the 2nd green have been cleared. This is to help with airflow and sunlight between the 2nd and 5th greens. There has been a noticeable difference to the 2nd green already. Another benefit for this location is the visual impact it has on approach shots to the green and it also increases views to other parts of the course.

The next area addressed was the right hand side of the 2nd fairway. The tree crowns were raised to help maintain the playing surface using machinery underneath.

The area at the right hand side of the 2nd tee was cleared to help with airflow and to encourage golfers to use the path to the 18th tee.

There has been a lot of debate regarding how the 1st tee is affecting the number of golf balls that are going into the houses to the right of the 1st fairway. From the start of next season we will be reverting back to the original tee. The 1st tee area is going to be redeveloped in the new year. The trees have been removed from the right of the original tee. The stumps will be removed when the remaining work is carried out.

The next area cleared was the copse of trees between the 2nd tee and the 3rd green. This is to help with airflow, sunlight and to increase views to other parts of the course.
